The Hospitality of Need is all about caring for one another and seeing our needs, not as barriers or burdens, but as tools to grow deeper in fellowship with one another and with God.

Caring for somebody is risky. Sometimes, the relationship gets lopsided and awkward. There have been times when I “help,” but leave feeling like I was taken advantage of. With Kevan it’s different. Over the last 8 years I’ve gotten him out of bed in the mornings, helped him shower, dress, and brush his teeth.
As a father with a family and a demanding job it’s sometimes hard to be at his bedside, sometimes I even feel resentment for having to take time out of my day to help.
But what’s weird is I have never, not one time, left his presence feeling taken advantage of. Kevan has a way of encouraging everyone who cares for him. I might be doing tasks that make me uncomfortable, like clipping toenails or scrubbing body parts, but throughout the process our conversation meanders from general life topics to deeply personal ones and everything in between. The whole time, Kevan listens intently, seeks to understand, and offers encouragement.
Each time I walk into his home with a plan to help him but leave feeling like the time was for me. From Kevan, I have learned that helping can—and should—be symbiotic and beautiful.
