We’ve been gifted with seven years of hosting Kevan, Katie, and their crew when they are in Nashville. Initially, it felt like God’s way of utilizing an ADA guest space we built to host some of our visiting family who have disabilities. When we met Kevan, we thought something like, “How neat—we have this gift—what a way for God to use it.”
In more recent years, we’ve entered our own season of struggles with health, parenting, and careers. Though deeply personal, we found it natural to share these struggles with Kevan and Katie. Their experience of need, unabashed and honest, is an invitation for us to share ours. The hospitality we expected to be one-directional, from us to our guests, returned to us multiplied. Our time with Kevan and Katie is limited to a few visits a year, but our conversations are wide open. Their ability to get to the heart of things has cracked the door to a bigger conversation of how we relate to, serve, and worship our Creator amid the reality of pain. And with honesty comes joy. The jokes are funnier, the memories deeper, and the sense of togetherness stronger.

Through engaging real-life stories, Kevan Chandler and Tommy Shelton share what can happen when we invite others into our lives—hardships and all. Ultimately, this is a book about friendship . . . the kind that God has called us to live in . . . friendship that goes deep and flourishes, not in spite of our needs but actually through them.
