One of my favorite things about the guys being at our house is what I hear. No, I can’t hear their conversations or what they are talking about, but I can clearly hear their bellowing and joyous laughter. I get to witness the fruit of what happens when we, together with our friends, join Jesus by reciprocally applying hospitality within our needs, and it is a beautiful and contagious sound!
Our marriage has also been blessed by the guys stepping into our Needs. The guys not only come over to hang with Kevan in the morning and get him up and ready for the day, but they also graciously act on behalf of Kevan and his thoughtful leading to occasionally pitch in with acute needs; things like making the bed, taking out the trash, mowing the lawn, doing the dishes, vacuuming, fixing broken stuff, moving heavy items, making a meal if I’m sick, packing the van before a trip, etc. All are things that Kevan would willingly do himself if he was able-bodied. But through the love and generosity of his friends, Kevan is able to do all of these things, and as a result both I and our marriage are so blessed. One morning recently, we received the following from one of the guys, and I think it says it all…

“Last week, when Katie was sick, I had the wonderful privilege to watch Kevan go outside to water the garden, to watch him pick flowers for his beloved, to watch him do the dishes for her, to watch him make her a smoothie and then he took the flowers and the smoothie in to her room to help make her feel better. I got to watch him do it all because he loves his bride so much. And then it hit me. KEVAN DID IT ALL and I had the wonderful honor of being his hands and feet. Wow! What a perfect image that is of what it’s like to be the hands and feet of Jesus as HE IS THE ONE who is actually doing the work!”
