The following poem is for Kevan and Katie, whose friendship is worth more than all the earth’s treasure and has changed me for the good.

    “Mend”

There came a work we did not seek
    that offered up its hand
With friendship bold, but body meek
it bade us lend a hand

    A partnership paired from above
was not what we had planned
But arose a detour, woven by love,
We followed, and found a God-send

At first, we danced an awkward dance
    while learning proper care
    But quickly bridged the distances
once held with insecurity and fear

And though the work, indeed was work
    our joy… was overfilled!
Which broke down walls, … through His Masterwork,
that our human hearts had built

The Master… in His gentle way
knew He’d change us for the good
through a chance to give dignity, every day
… To others, … if we would

His lessons show us work and love
    Of everyone, He was aware
Our Friend, Our Helper, The Father’s Beloved
He gives strength for service and care

Poured out like wine with bread, broke, …and…
    humbly washing feet, He’d bend
Before giving up His Body, … broken …
for all our brokenness to mend

    In servitude to others, we
are met in our own need
And we’ll reap a future bounty
    sown through Hospitality Seeds …

when through His grace, the roles reverse!
It is to us, whom hand was lent
A transaction of companionship! A priceless worth!
On us, this precious gift was spent

Ultimately, this is a book about friendship . . . the kind that God has called us to live in . . . friendship that goes deep and flourishes, not in spite of our needs but actually through them.
