As the crisp crackling popped through my stethoscope, my healthcare background suspected pneumonia. The labored rising and falling of Kevan’s chest signaled what was happening inside on a deeper, cellular level. A lung infection is serious. But for my friend Kevan, with spinal muscular atrophy, it is grave danger. I finished listening to him, advised he seek further medical care, and prayed for his lungs.

Later, as my dry heaves and wet tears flooded his floor and his hands, Kevan auscultated to what was left of my heart. My wife of 10 years left abruptly with the deadly ping of a text message. My terminal condition lay underneath. “A crushed spirit who can bear?” (Proverbs 18:14). A heart breaking makes a sound rarely heard save by those in the field of hospitality. Kevan listened to me, offered me a bed to stay a night, and prayed for my heart. The sharing of common interests offers us friendship, but the sharing of our mutual needs sutures uncommon fellowship.
